Hever Castle Triathlon

December 22, 2017

On Sunday 25th September BarrettClark sent a 3 man team to Hever Castle in Kent to compete in the Hever Castle Triathlon which is part of the Castle Series of four triathlons in 4 months.

Simon Clark, Darren Campbell and Stefan Poulos all took part and completed the task raising over £700 for charity and getting extremely fit in the process. The commentary on the event that follows is provided by our team mascot from the office, Martin Jones, who was not able to compete for health reasons!

The Swim 800m

The Barrettclark team, fine figures in their slippery wetsuits looking like man size rubber topped pencils braced themselves for what was going to be a punishing 3 hours and joined the final wave of athletes ready to take on the lake for an icy swim. Stefan was first out of the water with Darren hot on his heals, both with impressive times, Simon followed not too far behind as they all headed into the 1st transition (transition is the change over bit where they had to remove the wetsuits and put on the cycling gear).

The Cycle 40km

Unfortunately, Stefan and Darren took nearly 5 min to get onto their bikes and disaster then struck for Darren when his bike broke down on the first hill. Using his initiative ripped a piece of plastic from his bike and he was up and running. Stefan also seemed to experience problems on this stage with only a few of his gears available but he masterfully struggled on. Coming into the 2nd transition there was a 2 min gap between Stefan and Simon however again swift in transition Simon managed to bridge this and he set out for the final leg neck a neck with Stefan. Darren followed closely and set out on what seemed an impossible task of catching them up.

The Run 8km

Proved a tough leg as it was peppered with steep inclines, just what the team needed at this point! Stefan managed to pull away and at the 4k mark had established a 3 min lead. Simon was only able to reduce the gap by 30 sec and so Stefan Poulos emerged the victor in 3hrs 5min with Simon close behind at 3hrs 7min and Mr Campbell much to my astonishment finishing the race and in a relatively respectable 3hrs 25min.

A great day out, cracking efforts from our team and sponsorship for a worthy cause!
